Balut

Balut


Balut is a 16-21 day old boiled fertilized duck egg. What do you do with it? You eat it. Balut is probably one of the most well known street food out there. Essentially its a boiled egg, kept warm and ready to eat anywhere with or without condiments. This fact may be one of the reasons why it is also a very common street food. It is commonly found in South East Asian countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Balut may be consumed entirely but normal people however eat only what is inside the shell. There are tons of spin-offs that have come from the basic balut. Stewed, fried, baked, barbecued etc., there are many ways of preparing it other than the simple boiled egg with a few condiments here and there.
This openness though is commonly reserved for the locals because balut is taboo to other cultures and nationalities. Often as seen on TV, it is presented as an eating challenge for folks who are foreign to balut.
There may be differences in the way balut is eaten but commonly the roundest part of the shell is carefully cracked open. creating a hole only small enough for you to be able to sprinkle a little salt and sip the eggs broth. After that the yolk, egg white and duck embryo are consumed.
