This is very important stuff, keyword research would probably be something that you would do over and over again and then over again. The reason being is you want to stay current in the market and keep your edge so to speak. Some even do this every three months just to be on the safe side, while a select few keep doing it obsessively for them not to lose their #1 spot. The constant analysis of the niche you chose and the maintenance you do determine in a large part the placement of your site in that niche. 

Imagine keyword research in terms of basketball. Shaq is the representation of the people you want to come and visit your site. The goal is your site, so Shaq is shooting free throws but you know how that is, there is a slim to no chance that he makes the basket and shoots a goal straight to your site. What we do then is cheat, we increase the size of the hoop. This creates a wider goal and even if his shot is far from center, if we created a wide enough goal, then it would be a perfect shot every time. Although this is Shaq, even the SEO gurus might have trouble doing keyword research to create a wide enough goal for him.

There are tons of tools that have been set forth on the internet to help with keyword research, some free of charge and some not. The Google keyword tool comes to mind and this one is fairly easy to use as well. What you do is pop in keywords, results come out and then you can do analysis in comparison with the other data you can collect from the same keyword research tool.
